Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra January Concert

Thursday, December 22, 2011

On January 12th and 13th, the 60 professional members of the Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra will present a concert inspired by the basic element of life - water. With world-class conductor Michael J. Garasi at the helm, we will navigate down the Austrian "Blue Danube" to Vienna with Johann Strauss II and cruise down Smetana's "Moldau" River in Czechoslovakia. We'll explore the dark mood of the cave and sea surrounding "Fingal's Cave" on the Island of Staffa in the Scottish Hebrides as composed by Felix Mendelssohn.

In particular, the second movement of "The Florida Suite" by English composer Frederick Delius relates to the water theme. It is titled "The River," and memorializes the St. Johns River where it flowed past the grove that Delius was managing near Jacksonville on his American sojourn in 1886.

Water-plying pirates and sailors will be musically feted. The familiar "Russian Sailors' Dance" from the ballet "The Red Poppy" by Reinhold Gliere brings to mind a chorus line of dancing Cossacks. A montage of the movie music of Hans Zimmer from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies rounds out the tribute to seafarers.

These pieces and more pay tribute to life-nourishing water.

The Mount Dora concert is on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Highland Street in Mount Dora. The South Lake concert will be held Friday January 13, 2012 at the South Lake High School, 15600 Silver Eagle Rd. in Groveland. Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

A door-to-door shuttle is available for $15. Call Cynthia Greeley at 352-589-8811 to schedule.

Tickets are $42 in advance and $45 at the door. Students are $15. Group tickets are also available. Advance tickets can be purchased by sending a check to FLSO, 2034 Bayside Ave., Mount Dora, FL 32757.
