Plant a Tree at The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail and Get a Tree to Take Home

Posted on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 1:00 am

On Earth Day, April 22, from 8am-11am, The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail is giving community members a unique opportunity for hands-on nature learning—planting trees at the Trail to improve habitat for the Florida Scrub-Jay and help other wildlife by providing food, cover, and places for wildlife to thrive. Everyone participating will be given a free tree to help their own habitat thrive (while supply lasts).
“Planting a tree is a perfect opportunity for kids and adults to learn about the environment and get dirt under their fingernails,” says Patrick Fitzgerald, senior director of community wildlife for the National Wildlife Federation. “A single tree can clean the air and water, provide food for wildlife and humans and serve as shelter. It can serve as a microcosm of a sustainable environment and teach kids a lot about the world they live in:
• Select the tree that makes sense for your property at home or in your community. Choose from: Flatwoods plum, Sand Live Oak, Small Fruit Paw Paw, Scrub Hickory or Winged Elm.
• Trees improve water quality, reduce flooding and erosion and slow evaporation through stabilizing stream beds and filtering water through leaves.
• Trees help reduce energy costs for schools and homes by providing shade in the   summer – reducing air conditioning costs – and acting as wind breaks in the winter.
• Trees improve health by providing a calm and relaxing environment and help add to an overall sense of well-being. Hospital studies indicate that patients who have window views of trees and green spaces are calmer and more relaxed, and many heal faster.
• Tree planting projects are a visible sign of a commitment to improving green space and community aesthetics.
The tree planting will teach children how to properly plant and care for a tree while learning about wildlife, science, and ecology. According to Cathy Brown, Executive Director of the Florida Scrub-Jay Consortium “We have offered tree planting opportunities to kids and adults in the past, and they’ve been very enthusiastic                                                                                                                and often come back to see their trees and how they’ve grown.”
The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail provides direct, immediate benefit to the Florida Scrub-Jay and its surrounding habitat, and raises awareness of and involvement in the conservation of the species. This involves working with the public and private sector. The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail is open, free to the public, Saturdays to Wednesdays from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
