Lake public schools will serve free meals through the National School Lunch Program to any student who wants one through Oct. 20.
In the wake of Hurricane Irma, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services via the USDA has extended this offer to cover free breakfasts and lunches to public school students in affected counties, including Lake.
Additionally, the USDA has granted the department approval to allow flexibility in the makeup of meals, as the state is reporting shortages of milk, bread and produce. As a result, some meals may not meet the standard menu planning or meal pattern requirements for schools.
We realize that some families are still struggling to recover from the impact of Hurricane Irma. We hope the free meals for students will help lighten that burden.
