The South Lake Marine Corps League (I.W. Hatcher Jr. Detachment 1120) announced its expansion of community-service based efforts in South Lake County, Florida, where the Detachment is headquartered. The members are ramping up to further support ongoing projects such as: Coordinating our local Toys for Tots campaign; Reaching out to veterans in need; Visiting veterans who are homebound, in hospice, and assisted living; Providing ceremonial honors such as color and honor guards for memorial events and funerals; Awarding Junior ROTC scholarships; Coordinating temporary housing for veterans and their families who are displaced.
To achieve their goals, the Detachment is searching for its own facility from which to operate. According to Commandant Rufino Garcia, the Detachment’s members want to expand their outreach and that having their own building or dedicated space is crucial. “Our Marines are committed to helping others, especially veterans who have health issues, need a temporary hand-up, and providing comfort and honor to the surviving families who have lost their loved one.”
Commandant Garcia proudly explained that the saying, “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” is more than a motto. “Marines take care of Marines. And, in our Detachment, we support all veterans whenever we can.”
Commandant Garcia explained that the Detachment is seeking a permanent home that would further facilitate the group’s initiatives. “We have been working with local civic and community leaders to locate an appropriate space that we can use as our full-time ‘home.’ By having a single location, we can store our materials, have needed office space, and our own meeting place whenever we need it.”
The Detachment is meeting at the Clermont Fire House No. 1 on State Road 50. “We appreciate Chief Carle Bishop’s hospitality. However, to achieve our outreach goals, we need to find a home of our own,” stated Commandant Garcia. “We have much to offer our local community.
If you have a building or space that could suit the Detachment, please contact Commandant Garcia. Marines or other veterans interested in joining the Detachment can contact Commandant Garcia, 352-727-7760.
